Hill-sinki was Warm in the Winter’s entry for a competition in Itäkesku, Helsinki.
The possibilities of Itäkeskus are endless and the proposal uses these pre-conditions to develop the area. Hill-sinki creates value out of the hilly landscape, the modern and post-modern legacy, the cultural and ecological diversity and the fact that this is a strong destination and an important gateway to Helsinki. By embracing the power of people living in Itäkeskus, Hill-sinki supports a local perspective with a bottom up movement in combination with a humane top-down movement. This is manifested in three main objectives: Humanize the existing, Overcome the distances, Add supportive functions.
Humanize the existing
Hill-sinki lets existing buildings and public space be the starting point and driving force for the attractiveness of Itäkeskus at large. To save material and create the possibility of a growing circular economy the proposal focuses on re-use of existing buildings, parking spaces, streets, rooftops and bridges, but transforms them into a new public program.
Overcome the distances
Hill-sinki creates spatial and social integration by a set of walkable and bikeable streetscapes. These streetscapes intertwine recreation, culture, commerce and green and creates a strong bond of ecosystems, buildings, cultural exchange and accessible public space.
Add supportive functions
Hill-sinki makes Itäkeskus become not only a “go-to” part of the town but also a strong, well-functioning, mixed-use and vibrant city district on its own. This is possible by a number of additional buildings, places and community-based activities.
